Bio

Jan is an orchestral composer from Essex in the UK. He has just released his debut album 'Poems'.

"There was a time when I didn't like music. I still remember a documentary I watched in senior school - a musician spoke about how he felt he '...just could not live without it...'

I wondered how that was possible.

Then I bought a copy of Beethoven's 5th symphony and Rush's album 'Permanent Waves' (on the same day). I think I was about 14. It was a Damascene moment. Why was I weeping to the Beethoven and marvelling at the originality of Rush?

Guitar (and later piano and violin) lessons followed, but I didn't finish writing my first piece until I was about 25. I played in a Pink Floyd tribute band and recorded an album of original material but it wasn't until about 2016 that I started to consider the possibility of orchestrating my compositions. Kevin Riley (conductor of the Andover Light Orchestra) was my teacher and since then I have spent much time thinking and musing on how to blend such myriad forces to the desired effect."

The Westmorland Youth Orchestra recently performed his piece 'Poem No. 2' and he is about to begin work on the next album.
